The Red-naped Sapsucker is indeed one of the many beautiful bird species you might encounter in the White Mountains of Arizona. This bird, recognizable by its striking red and white plumage, is known for drilling rows of sap wells into tree bark to feast on the sap and the insects it attracts. The region`s diverse habitats provide a rich environment for birdwatching enthusiasts to spot the Red-naped Sapsucker among other avian residents. https://gowhitemountains.com/birdwatching/

The James M. Flake Home is a stately structure in Snowflake, Arizona, echoing the grandeur of the Victorian Second Empire style. Built in the late 19th century of locally fired bricks. Within its walls, it houses a treasure trove of the Flake family`s past, containing hundreds of items ranging from personal objects to a library of books, each carrying its own piece of history. The memorabilia provide an immersive experience, offering insights into the domestic life of the time and the personal history of the Flake lineage. As a well-preserved historical site, the James M. Flake Home stands not only as a monument of architectural significance but also as a living museum rich in stories and culture, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore the legacy of one of Snowflake`s founding families. https://newsletter.gowhitemountains.com/guide-to-snowflake-arizona/

Soooo happy to have a camera and be able to take photos again!!
A couple months ago my old camera got water logged in a dry bag which was supposed to...you know...keep my camera dry. Sadly, it died that day.
Those couple months without one was especially disappointing because documenting the places I go brings me just as much joy as being there.
I just had to take the new one out somewhere beautiful to test it out.
What better place than this lush, green, oasis far from the heat of Phoenix....

Weekend getaway🌲🚙
We spent the weekend in the White Mountains at our favorite place to stay (hosted). This time in one of the renovated airstreams. We have a discount code for our followers that is good until 10/31. Use azhike23 for 15% off your stay at corduroylodge 🫶🏨🚐
We drove up after work on Friday night, and on Saturday we hiked West Fork Trail 628 to the Black River. We enjoyed lunch at Big Lake before afternoon rain showers rolled in🥾⛈️
🥾5.3 miles out and back. We hiked onto Thompson Trail a little before we turned around. There a few switchbacks that are steep to get down to the river 🚫🚽No restrooms 🚫🗑️No trash services 🚫🚰No water 🚙This trailhead is about an hour and 15 minutes from Corduroy Lodge 🚮Please remember to Leave No Trace! 📸Not pictured is our hike today

We left Phoenix around 4 pm and made it to Greer around 9 pm after making a couple of stops for food and gas. We had no trouble setting up ⛺️ even though it was dark out. The temperature at night was around 60F - perfect!
If you are looking for more details about things to do in Greer check out one of my recent posts. This would be the perfect Labor Day getaway!
